Computer Use Policies

The Cole Library computers are available for use by the following groups:

  • Rensselaer at Hartford Students, Faculty and Staff
  • Rensselaer at Hartford Alumni (please call ahead if you do not yet have your Alumni Borrowing Card)
  • Connecticut Quality Council Members

The Library has two catalog workstations. The general public is welcome to use these workstations to access the Library catalog.

Basic Conditions of Computer Use:

  • Rensselaer at Hartford students who wish to do research with the Cole Library's Internet resources have priority for computer use.
  • Users may access their Rensselaer at Hartford network accounts through Library computers.
  • Use a disk to save files; please do not save them on the computers as files are automatically deleted. The bookstore on the third floor sells disks.
  • Use Library computers for e-mail or listservs only if they are course related.
  • Download executable (.exe) files only to network accounts or to floppy disks.
  • When leaving the computer, please close all files and programs. If you have logged on to your network account, then please log off.
  • Please do not change any settings on the Library computers (wallpaper, screen savers, etc.).

Thank you for your cooperation. Violators of the Computer Use Policy may be asked to leave the computers or the Cole Library.


Borrowing Policies

Guest Borrowers


Rensselaer at Hartford Students, Faculty and Staff

A Rensselaer at Hartford identification card with a barcode is required to borrow any Library materials. Rensselaer at Hartford students, faculty and staff may borrow up to 12 books from the open collection. Books are loaned for fifteen weeks. Books can not be renewed. Reserve materials and other items are loaned for shorter periods. See Course Reserves for more information about reserve materials.

Books may be returned directly to the Information Services Desk in the Library or to the book drop located outside the North (cafeteria) entrance to the Rensselaer at Hartford building.

Rensselaer at Hartford students are subject to fees, and replacement bills issued for Cole Library materials. Fines for reserve materials (including course video tapes) are 2 dollars per day per item. A bill for replacement is issued one month after the due date of a delinquent item. There are no fines for books borrowed from the open collection.

Overdue Loans. The library allows a 10 day “grace” period following the expiration of loans for borrowers to return items. Loans not returned this time are subsequently considered LOST, and borrowers become subject to billing procedures and loss of borrowing privileges.

Recall from Loan. All loans are subject to recall. Materials needed for Class Reserve may be recalled from loan at any time. Materials needed by another borrower are recalled not earlier than 28 days from date of original loan. Borrowers failing to return recalled loans within specified time periods will be billed for replacement costs.

Rensselaer at Hartford Alumni

Alumni Borrowing Cards are issued to alumni of Rensselaer at Hartford and the Hartford Graduate Center. Alumni Borrowing Card registration forms are available at the Cole Library's Information Services Desk. Library staff will need to verify your graduation with the registrar's office, so please call ahead or allow one business day for this process.

Alumni may present their Alumni Borrowing Card to borrow up to 6 books from the Cole Library's open collection. Books are loaned for two weeks.

Alumni may renew books two times on or before the day they are due, provided that no holds have been requested by other borrowers. Overdue books may not be renewed. Books may be renewed by telephone or in person. Please have your Alumni Borrowing Card available.

Alumni are subject to fees, and replacement bills issued for Cole Library materials. A bill for replacement is issued one month after the due date of a delinquent item.

Guest Borrowers

Guest Borrowing Cards are issued to Connecticut Quality Council members and their affiliates only. The Cole Library does not accept public library cards.

Guests may present their Guest Borrowing Card to borrow up to 6 books from the open collection. Books from the open collection are loaned for two weeks. Guests may not borow reserve materials.

Guests may renew books two times on or before the day they are due, provided that no holds have been requested by other borrowers. Overdue books may not be renewed. Books may be renewed by telephone or in person. Please have your Guest Borrowing Card available.

Guest borrowers are subject to fees, and replacement bills issued for Cole Library materials. A bill for replacement is issued one month after the due date of a delinquent item.

Web-Based Services for Alumni & Guests

You may present your Alumni or Guest Borrowing Card to gain access to the library’s suite of web-based subscription databases. These databases provide access to articles in journals, magazines and newspapers, financial and statistical data, and technical literature.

Database access is offered only in the Cole Library. An Alumni or Guest Borrowing Card is required.

Alumni and guests may also take advantage of the Cole Library’s full range of Research Guides on the web. These include Subject Guides, which feature topics like Company & Industry Research and Finance & Investment, and the Industry Data Finder, which provides links to industry-specific resources.

Collection Security

The Cole Library collection is protected by an electronic security system. If the system's alarm sounds as you exit the Library, then you must go to the Information Services Desk and permit Library staff to determine the cause of the alarm.

Closing Time

You must return all reserve items and check out all circulating items at the Information Services Desk by fifteen minutes before closing time. Library staff will turn off photocopy machines and lock study rooms at fifteen minutes before closing time. Please exit the Library promptly at closing time.
