Founded in 1824

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation's oldest technological university. For almost two centuries, Rensselaer has been at the forefront of business and technology, instilling in our students intellectual agility, multicultural sophistication and a global view.

Why not change the world?®

We take our institute motto as a directive, and our alumni, students, and faculty do change the world every day. Our alumni/ae have engineered canals, bridges, and railroads around the world, and they helped bring us to the moon. Our faculty and students are reshaping matter at the atomic scale through nanotechnology, and they are discovering the patterns and possibilities of future versions of the Web.

Challenging, Interactive, and Highly Relevant

A Rensselaer education is rigorous, holistic, multifaceted, and supportive. We take a pedagogical approach that is multidisciplinary and that connects the classroom, design studio, or laboratory to the living environment of the students, cultivating robust and sustained learning. Our students are a multigenerational community of learners, engaged in deep discovery, discourse, and technological innovation, who will make a difference for the world. The fundamental markers of Excellence, Leadership, and Community drive our students and the Institute every day.

Global Impact and Global Reach

As we intensify the global impact of the work that takes place here, Rensselaer, in turn, is poised to offer our students new challenges to tackle, new opportunities for discovery, and new areas in which to excel. Our increasing stature as a university helps you to achieve your individual goals. Likewise, your achievements help Rensselaer to raise its stature.

A Powerful Alumni Network

With over 95,000 alumni, including 20,000 from the Hartford campus, our graduates change the world every day. Rensselaer graduates are strategic leaders, senior executives, and accomplished entrepreneurs. They become not only the architects of their futures, but also significant contributors to their organizations and to society as a whole.

Graduate Certificate Programs

Several graduate certificates are available in Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering. They have a selective focus and require that a student successfully complete three or four courses in a specific area of study. With an advisor's approval, credits earned may be subsequently applied as electives toward a master's degree.

A range of professional development programs and services are offered at the Hartford Campus. These noncredit programs are designed to provide working professionals and organizations with the critical skills needed to be effective in today's dynamic workplace.
